Who can I talk to about my mental health?

In the UK you can talk to Samaritans free on 116 123 at any hour, text SHOUT to 85258, call CALM on 0800 58 58 58 between 5pm and midnight, refer yourself to NHS Talking Therapies without seeing a GP, or book a GP appointment. None of these require a diagnosis, and most don't need your name.

If you want to talk tonight

  • Samaritans — 116 123, free, 24/7, any subject. You do not have to be suicidal.
  • SHOUT — text SHOUT to 85258. Silent, so you can use it in a full house.
  • CALM — 0800 58 58 58, 5pm to midnight, built around how men talk.
  • NHS 111, option 2 — your local NHS crisis team, day or night.

If you want ongoing help, not one conversation

  • NHS Talking Therapies (England) — free CBT and counselling, and you can refer yourself online without a GP.
  • Your GP — the only words you need are 'I'm struggling with my mental health'.
  • Mind Infoline — 0300 102 1234, weekdays, for working out what to ask for.

If a room of strangers sounds better than a phone call

  • Andy's Man Club — free men's groups every Monday at 7pm.
  • Talk Club — men's groups that open with a score out of ten.
  • Men's Sheds — company side by side, with talking optional.

If you'd rather not speak to a person at all yet

Togetherall is a free, anonymous online community watched over by clinicians 24/7. Hub of Hope lists everything near your postcode. Neither asks for your real name.
