Do I have to give my name when I call a helpline?
No. Samaritans, CALM and SHOUT are all anonymous — you can use a first name or none at all. Calls to Samaritans (116 123) and CALM (0800 58 58 58) are free and do not appear on your phone bill, and SHOUT texts don't either. They will not contact your GP, family or employer, and will only involve emergency services if there is an immediate risk to life.
What they can see
Helplines aren't linked to your NHS record. They don't see your medical history and they don't start one. Nothing you say goes on a file that follows you.
Will it show on the bill?
Calls to Samaritans on 116 123 and CALM on 0800 58 58 58 are free from landlines and mobiles and are not itemised. SHOUT texts to 85258 are free on all major UK networks and don't appear either.
Could they send an ambulance?
Only if there's an immediate danger to life — for example if you've already taken something. Otherwise the decision stays with you. Fear of being sectioned stops a lot of men calling, and in practice it is uncommon.
Does the same apply to a GP?
A GP appointment does go in your medical record, and that is generally in your favour — it's what unlocks therapy referrals and sick notes. It does not automatically go to your employer, your insurer or the DVLA in most cases.
