A GP appointment is still the main door into NHS mental health care, and the only thing you have to say is that you're struggling with your mental health.

Who it's for

Anyone registered with a GP surgery. Registering is free and you don't need proof of address or immigration status.

Surgery hours; many take online requests.

What actually happens

• Ask for a double appointment if you can — ten minutes goes fast.
• You can write it down and hand the note over instead of saying it out loud.
• The GP will ask how long it's been going on and whether you've had thoughts of harming yourself. Answering honestly does not get you sectioned.
• Likely outcomes: a referral to talking therapy, medication, a follow-up appointment, or all three.
